Your newest little one is here! Congrats fam!
I’m sure you’re feeling alllllll the emotions and probably feeling just a tad bit overwhelmed. But you’re wanting those newborn photos (the squishy cheeks, tiny toes, and your newest family member cuddled up with you in bed (and maybe with your dog)) and aren’t sure where to start.
That’s why I created this guide for you-
3 things you can do to prep for in-home newborn photos.
1. Pick Your Outfits
Sometimes the hardest thing to do when it comes to photos is deciding on an outfit. Especially when you’ve added a new member!
Lay out several different options with different color combinations. Start with the newest family member’s attire and work out from there! Neutrals, greens, blues, and pinks always look good for newborn photos!
Choose several backup options for baby just in case of accidents or last minute changes and then add accessories from there. Think bows, socks, hats, blankets, stuffies etc.
For the adults and older kiddos, think of outfits you would wear at home or are comfiest in when going on a casual date (jeans, relaxed dresses, your favorite sweater).
Don’t overthink it and if you think you may change your mind, lay out several different options and go over them with your photographer when they get there!

2. Choose Your Spaces
When it comes to prep for in-home newborn photos, the next thing on your mind might be, where?
Deciding where to have your photos taken can also be an overwhelming process. Please do not stress over it!
The most common places for in-home newborn photos are the nursery, living room, and primary bedroom. Some families choose to have photos in all three, others just focus on one. There is no wrong answer and your house does not have to be spotless.
Let me repeat that. Your house does not have to be spotless.
As photographers, we understand how overwhelming everything can feel in the first few weeks of having a newborn. It is also our job to decide on angles, decide on what room works best, and move things as needed. If you want to tidy up the rooms you’ll be photographed in, that is okay but do not feel pressure to have the whole house clean!

3. Take it all in
Last but not least, the most important part to prep for in-home newborn photos- take it all in. Your little one will never be this small again and having these moments documented will be cherished for a lifetime.
Take a deep breath and enjoy the moments!

Bonus!
A few extra tips to make sure your in-home newborn photos go smoothly!
Have a family member come to your home to help as needed. They can help wrangle and entertain the other kiddos or just provide support as needed!
Have extra burp cloths, diapers, and pacifiers on standby! Newborns rule the house so the session is run by them! You never know what you may need in a moment’s notice.
Want to include your pet into photos? Allow them to get used to the photographer and roam around until they’re comfortable. Wait until the end once they’re warmed up to include them in pics so it can be one of your last photos!
Make it extra special! If there’s an activity that you love to do with your newborn or family, incorporate that! Walking the dog with the stroller around the neighborhood, cuddled up reading a book in the sunroom, or simply cooking together in the kitchen. These can add even more personalization and special moments to your in-home newborn photos.
